PHVP1401 Constructing The Moving Image: Evaluation

Evaluation

Once I was told what the project brief was, I instantly had the idea to create a smoking advert. I was also told that it was a group project. I had the choice of choosing my own group and chose my mates who work hard and enjoy what they do. So once we got together, we started talking about ideas and when we will be shooting the adverts. I did struggle with the visual side of my advert but everyone else seem to had theirs all planned. So I knew I had to think quick. With my advert I had faced many problems and obstacles during the time we were meant to be shooting. I had this idea of using one of the members from my group to act as she was the only one who smoked. The idea was for her to be in the advert smoking and then she coughs and the camera blurs to suggest health problems. Then she decides to quit smoking and her life gets better each day. Someone asks her for a lighter and she says 'here keep it'. Due to unfortunate circumstances, she fell ill and due to her having asthma, I couldn't risk it by her feeling worse. So I then asked someone else who does the same course and she agreed. But the next day she cancelled as she was already helping someone else with their work. The only option I had left was to post a Facebook status asking if there was a smoker who would be willing to act for me and someone replied. I didn't have a lot of time left so the next day I met her and her friend outside the University and we did the shoot and in my opinion it could have gone better, if I had my group there supporting me but I showed I can work independently and so I got on with it. I have done a little bit of video before during my time at college and secondary school, so I knew how to do the basics with editing. So editing would never be a problem with me. I found the most suitable music that I thought worked online and the clips I put together in the order that looked best. Comparing it professionally, I don't think that it will have a massive impact on people who smoke because it isn't a professional advert but if it gets the message out then that's what counts for me. Looking back at the final outcome of the advert, there are certain areas in which I would love to improve on but what is done is done. There are certain parts that I like about it, with the tagline and the factual parts of the advert as they are the main parts that I wanted people to focus on and thats why with the text, I had to make one or two words bold and a different colour so that they stood out and made people read the consequences of smoking. The reason why I chose to do a smoking advert is that, in college, I did something similar as a group project but using stock frame animation which was shown to a lot of people and it actually did have an impact on some people and made some people quit. That feeling was the best one ever. Hopefully I did the same with this advert.

Area To Improve: Focusing

The main area that I do need to improve on while filming is the focusing part. Although it isn't in focus in some cases this could work. An example that I looked at, could improve on the focus but it looked more realistic and that is why I chose to keep it like this. To make it look like real life. I think it fits in with the idea but I would love to improve on my focusing to get a better result and maybe would have a better impact too.

My Advert

Anti Smoking Campaign

The reason I chose to do an anti smoking campaign for my advert is because I wanted to try something serious and to see what impact I can have on people that actually smoke. If there isn't any impact then it means I need a stronger message but if it does have an impact then it means I've done the job. Due to difficulties with my group, I had to change my idea quite a bit... so now the new idea is a couple of shots of people smoking cigarettes and a shisha pen... then I include facts about the outcomes of smoking. I then finally end it with a strong line. 'If YOU can't stop smoking... Cancer will.' I think that a strong tagline is really important because it helps to set the mood of the advert. A comical tagline will help realise that the advert is a funny one and people will realise that it is a joke.

I think that my tagline is a strong one because it is a strong message to those who smoke. I have decided to highlight some words in the advert to make it bolder and so that it jumps out at people. Hopefully it makes them aware of the consequences of smoking.

PHVP1401 Constructing The Moving Image : Difficulties I Faced

Problems with my Ideas

When I chose to create an anti smoking campaign, I came up with an idea to show the bad effects of smoking to the good and also how second hand smoke can actually effect another person. I had to change this idea due to my group being unavailable to take part in the advert. Due to this I changed the idea and decided to ask another member in our classes to see if they could take part and luckily someone said they were. The next day I asked them if they were free to shoot but they then cancelled due to having other priorities. Which then led me to change my idea once again and to write a post on Facebook, asking if any smokers would be available to help me and act in my advert. Luckily someone messaged me and I was then able to plan with her and her friend and the next day I filmed the advert.

Advert 3

Anti Smoking Commercial - (YouTube) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1DNoole3Wo

This advert is pretty good but isn't as strong as the other examples. I think this relates more to secondhand smoke and how it passes on from mother to daughter. The ad also shows the little girl grown up and pregnant and then she is smoking too. The advert just goes to show that secondhand smoke can make someone else addicted to smoking and it is down to that person smoking in the first place. What I did like about the advert is the slow paced music, creating tension and drama. It helps us show how serious secondhand smoke can be and makes us all aware of it and to be careful at the same time.

Perhaps One Of The Best Anti-Smoking Ads Ever Created - (YouTube) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO0qwl5k9R4

What I really love about this advert is that it has a massive impact on the people in the ad itself and will also have an impact on the people just watching the advert. When I first watched it, I was really into it. This advert doesn't try to pass their message through sound, camera angles but the children themselves. The children asks the people to light their cigarette and the people say no and give them advice on how smoking is bad and makes them look older. But what the people don't realise is that they're smoking themselves and then the children give them a leaflet and a massive 40% had ended up quitting. It is an emotional thing to see children asking for a light but they helped a lot of people and if it wasn't for this advert then that 40% would still be smoking. This is the kind of thing I want to create within my own advert and hopefully I will be able to do that.

Examples of Adverts

Smoking Health Harms Ad - (Youtube) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrRwp5KXfrg

This advert is such a such a simple one yet it has a massive impact. It doesn't have any sound except for a voice over and it just creates tension, having an impact on us, the viewers but also the smokers who watch this advert. The camera shots are a good choice due to them being able to set the scene, the mood and the atmosphere too. This is a good example of an advert that stands out and shows their target audience the effects of smoking. An advert that can show the serious impact of smoking will have an effect on their audience and will definitely get their message out.

PHVP1401 Constructing The Moving Image: Camera Shots

Camera Shots

CU (Close Up0
CA (Cutaway)
Cut-In
Two Shot
(OSS) Over-the shoulder shot
MCU (Mid close up)

This list are the camera shots, I will try to use for when I am creating my advert. I will also shoot some close ups which will then allow me to cut in between shots and will have a fast pace to the final outcome. I think it is important to have various camera shots so that it won't look boring. In an advert that is trying to have impact on people, it is important that you make sure they are focusing on the advert, so the camera shots, the text and other features in the advert need to catch their attention.

PHVP1401 Constructing The Moving Image: Treatment

Treatment:

My idea is to create an advert that will have a impact on people’s lives. The idea is around smoking and how smoking can affect those who doesn’t smoke. What you will see is what happens and just how smokers cough is serious. You will hear a lot of coughing to show the impact of smoking and there will be dramatic music to go with it.

All of the shots will be filmed outside, using natural lighting. Majority of the shots will be close ups or extreme close ups to show emotion and to show the effect of smoking. I will use music that matches with the scenario, and as we reach the ending, the music will fade out and go pitch silent. I will include a simple tagline that is a strong message at the end of the advert to make sure people get it inside their head that smoking is bad. Although the advert is simple, I think the message is strong and is an advert that will make people think. I may use a voiceover for the tagline so instead of just reading it they can hear it too and that way it will be in their minds when watching the advert.
